THE LAST SHIP is a love story, a hymn to community and a tragedy that tells the story of one community’s defiant response to the predations of capitalism. The Wallsend shipyard is faced with closure, and its workers, families who have supported this industry for generations, don’t know what the future holds for them. As he grapples with his own mortality, their foreman, Jackie White, leads the people he loves in an extraordinary act of defiance, trying to imagine a different world where the bottom line isn’t all that matters…
As Jackie tries to heal the community he’s part of, another broken relationship is suddenly re-awoken when Gideon Fletcher, a lost son of the shipyards who went to sea rather than follow his father onto the slipway, returns in the week after his father’s funeral in order to settle his affairs. For the first time in seventeen years, he meets the girl he left behind, Meg Dawson – and, to his amazement, the daughter he never knew he had, Ellen, born shortly after he went to sea. As the shipyard rises up in defiance, this family must also grapple with what kind of relationship is possible for them.
